113 asylum seekers arrived in Rwanda last night from Libya, as part of a program Rwanda cooperates with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to accommodate them while they look for foreign countries to host them.
Those who arrived are part of the 18th phase of this program known as ‘Emergency Transit Mechanism’ (ETM), where they will be accommodated in the Gashora center located in the Bugesera district in eastern Rwanda.
The HCR statement says that the program accepts refugees when their human rights are “in immediate danger in Libya”. They were taken to Rwanda “for a short and voluntary stay”.
“Then they are transferred to another country.”
Rwanda’s ministry in charge of relief activities says that these new arrivals from Libya come from six countries.
They are from South Sudan, Eritrea, Sudan, Ethiopia, Côte d’Ivoire and Somalia, according to Rwandan state media.
They usually find themselves in poor conditions in Libya after failing to reach Europe, often trying to reach it by boat across the Mediterranean.
Since the start of the ETM program in 2019, the Ministry of Relief says that about 2,355 people have been received in Rwanda.
HCR says it is helping these refugees at the Gashora center, which currently has the capacity to accommodate up to 700 people at a time.
This cooperation program between HCR and the government of Rwanda is supported by the European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU).
From 2019 to the end of March (3) this year, HCR reports that 1,623 refugees from the Gashora camp had been transferred to countries such as Norway, Sweden, Canada, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland and the United States, where they received asylum. and start another life.
The ETM is different from the agreement Rwanda has with the United Kingdom to receive asylum seekers who arrive in the UK illegally, it is planned that they will be forcibly transferred to Rwanda, and they can apply for asylum or request the right to settle there.
The program is disputed by the Rwandan government and HCR, and HCR and others filed new charges against it in the High Court of England.
