The Amahoro Stadium in Remera, Rwanda, is currently undergoing a significant upgrade, with construction work being carried out by the Turkish construction company SUMMA JV Rwanda. The project is expected to be completed by June 2024. Here are some key details about the upgrade:
The government is investing over Rwf160 billion in the renovation and expansion of Amahoro Stadium.
The stadium’s initial capacity is anticipated to increase from 25,000 to 45,000 seats upon completion, making it the largest stadium in Rwanda.
Unlike some stadiums that are demolished to build new ones, SUMMA JV Rwanda is maintaining the existing structure of Amahoro Stadium and expanding it to increase its capacity.
The upgrade includes expansion to various parts of the stadium, the addition of roofing to protect spectators from extreme weather conditions, and overall enhancements to provide more comfort for attendees.
Once completed, Amahoro Stadium is expected to host not only international football matches but also concerts and public events, making it a versatile multi-purpose facility.
During a visit to the construction site, workers were observed assembling steel structures, using machinery to create concrete chairs, and preparing on the pitch, such as digging holes and laying soil, sand, and stones.
Approximately 95 percent of the 2,100 workers involved in the construction project are Rwandans, highlighting the local employment opportunities generated by the upgrade.
The expansion of Amahoro Stadium reflects Rwanda’s commitment to investing in world-class infrastructure to provide top-notch facilities for its citizens and visitors.
The upgraded Amahoro Stadium is set to be a significant addition to Rwanda’s sports and entertainment infrastructure, offering an enhanced experience for spectators and accommodating a larger audience for various events.
