Rwanda eyes CAF Women’s Champions League 2026 hosting

Panorama Sports

Rwanda could host the final tournament of the CAF Women’s Champions League 2026 after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) reportedly approached the country about staging Africa’s premier women’s club football competition.

Launched in 2021, the CAF Women’s Champions League was established to strengthen and professionalise women’s club football across Africa. The tournament brings together the continent’s leading women’s clubs, which qualify through regional competitions organised across CAF’s six football zones.

The final tournament is traditionally contested by eight teams: six clubs representing CAF’s regional zones, the defending champions, and a representative of the host nation. The host country is therefore given an opportunity to have a club participate in the competition in addition to the team that may qualify through its regional tournament.

If Rwanda is officially selected to host the 2026 edition, Rayon Sports WFC could secure a place in the final tournament as the host nation’s representative. Rayon Sports WFC, however, did not qualify through the CECAFA regional qualifiers, having been eliminated during the group stage. Kawempe Muslims Ladies secured the ticket to represent the CECAFA region at the final tournament.

This means that should the tournament be staged in Rwanda, the CECAFA region could have two representatives at the continental finals: Kawempe Muslims Ladies, as the regional qualifiers, and Rayon Sports WFC, potentially as the host country’s representative.

Hosting the competition would also mark another major international sporting event for Rwanda, which has increasingly positioned itself as a destination for continental and global sporting competitions.

CAF is yet to make a final official announcement on the host country for the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League.
