The President of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), David Lappartient, has expressed his condolences to the families of victims who lost their lives in a promotional caravan vehicle accident during the opening stage of the Tour du Rwanda.

The fatal incident occurred on Sunday, February 22, in Kabarore Sector of Gatsibo District, when a promotional caravan vehicle lost control under heavy rain in Gabiro. The accident happened after the completion of the 173.6-kilometre opening stage from Gicumbi District to Rwamagana District via Nyagatare, Gatsibo and Kayonza Districts.

According to authorities, the vehicle struck spectators, resulting in the deaths of two people and leaving six others injured.

Lappartient joined the global cycling community in mourning the victims and extending support to those affected. “Deeply saddened to hear of the tragic accident that occurred during the Tour of Rwanda. The UCI sends its condolences to the friends and family affected and wishes a quick recovery to those injured,” he posted on X on Monday, February 23.

A minute of silence was observed during the Stage One awarding ceremony in Rwamagana in honour of the victims, reflecting solidarity from riders, officials, and supporters.

On the sporting front, Israel’s Itamar Einhorn of the NSN Development Team won the opening stage after clocking 4 hours and 5 seconds.

The injured spectators are currently receiving medical treatment, while the Rwanda National Police has launched investigations to determine the cause of the accident.
