Girls Face More Sexual Violence than Boys – Research

Munezero Jeanne d’Arc

A global study conducted by researchers from the University of Washington and the World Health Organization (WHO), spanning 204 countries from 1990 to 2023, has revealed that 18.9% of girls experience sexual violence before reaching adulthood, compared to 14.8% of boys.

This means that 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 7 boys are victims of sexual violence during childhood.

The research highlights regional disparities: South Asia has the highest rates among females, Sub-Saharan Africa shows higher prevalence among males.

Those who experience such abuse at a young age are more likely to suffer from mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) later in life.

Dr. Emmanuela Gakidou, who led the study, stated “Sexual violence against children is a clear violation of their human rights and health. Sadly, the world has failed to effectively address this issue.”

Researchers further noted that the actual figures are likely higher, as many cases go unreported particularly because the victims are minors and may be unable or afraid to speak out.

The study found alarming trends: Among girls who had turned 25, 41.6% had experienced sexual violence before the age of 16,7.7% were abused before turning 12.

Dr. Gakidou added: “The fact that so many are abused at such a young age is extremely concerning. Every country must take immediate action by reforming laws and strengthening policies to protect children.”

The Situation in Rwanda

According to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB), in the 2023/2024 fiscal year, a total of 4,567 cases related to child defilement were investigated. These cases involved 4,849 child victims, of which 4,646 were girls and 203 were boys. Among those accused, 4,901 individuals were suspected of committing the crimes, 4,767 were men, and 134 were women.
