Great Britain’s Joseph Blackmore completed his reign at the Tour du Rwanda by winning the second stage of the 16th edition on Sunday.
The 21-year-old rider from the Israel-Premier Tech team had already been wearing the yellow jersey since his victory on Mont Kigali on Friday, and he secured his overall victory with panache by attacking after the Mur de Kigali with less than ten kilometres to go, leaving his main rivals in the overall classification behind him.
Joseph Blackmore already took part in the Tour du Rwanda in 2023, finishing in 6th place. It’s a race that I already enjoyed a year ago and I wanted to come back this year to do better,” he declared. It was a great challenge and I succeeded.
It makes me very proud because the Tour du Rwanda is a very beautiful race but very difficult to win. During this final stage, which was drawn on the circuit for the 2025 world championships to be held in Kigali, the Briton managed to claw back 30 seconds from his rivals despite only holding a small lead in the overall classification. He preferred to defend himself by attacking, putting on a magnificent show.
This was his first year as a professional rider and his first race in the colours of the Israel-Premier Tech team. He completed the squad of the number 1 team in this Tour du Rwanda, even though he is part of the continental development team. A real success for his first time.
