Rwanda and Egypt have signed a five-year agreement to strengthen cooperation in nuclear safety and regulatory oversight, supporting the safe and secure use of nuclear and radiological technologies for peaceful purposes.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed this morning in Vienna on the sidelines of the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, by Evariste Rugigana, Director General of the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA), and Hany Khedr, Chairman of the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA).
The partnership will provide a framework for the two countries to share technical knowledge, regulatory experience and good practices in nuclear and radiological safety.
Under the five-year agreement, Rwanda and Egypt will promote joint training programmes, expert visits and the exchange of technical expertise to strengthen regulatory capacity.
The cooperation is expected to support Rwanda’s efforts to develop the skills and institutional capacity needed to safely regulate the growing use of nuclear and radiological technologies.
The agreement comes as Rwanda continues to explore peaceful applications of nuclear technology in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, energy and scientific research, where effective regulation is essential to protect people and the environment.
The partnership with ENRRA will also provide opportunities for Rwandan experts and regulators to learn from Egypt’s experience in nuclear and radiological regulation.
The MoU forms part of Rwanda’s wider engagement with international partners on nuclear safety and the peaceful use of nuclear technology, with the IAEA providing an important platform for cooperation, technical assistance and knowledge exchange.
The signing brings together the representatives from member states to discuss nuclear science and technology, safety, security and their peaceful applications.
