Rayon Sport FC failed to extend the gap with rivals APRF FC after losing to bottom side AS Muhanga in the Rwanda National Football League.
Rayon wasted a chance to edge closer to the league title after Thursday’s 1-0 loss to AS Muhanga on in a game played at Stade de Muhanga.
Jean Dieu Akayezu scored the lone goal of the game on the 57 minute of the game to give after the break gave the bottom side a comfortable lead.
However, Rayon failed to redeem them when they were denied by the three times.
The defeat guarantees the defending champions APR a 16th league trophy as the Military side are leading the league table with 67 points, ten ahead of third-placed Rayon and this year’s Peace Cup with two matches to go.
Defensive blunders
It only took Akayezu twelve minutes to give Rayon an early lead after a fatal error by Rayon’s defence error.
Rayon players quickly intensified their attacks to restore the balance but seemed to miss the spark amid tightened defense by the opponent.
Coach Djuma Masudi played the game without his key attacking forward of Malian striker Ismail Diarra, Davis Kasirye and Burundian international Pierro Kwizera.
Meanwhile, in the game between Mukura beat Marines fc 2-0 to earn three crucial points as they continue to cement themselves in the second position. Blaise Itangishaka opened the lead in the 16th minute before Haruna Muvunyi made it two in the 26th minute.
Mukura is now second with 60 points; Rayon is down to the third place though they still have two games at hand. The national league continues on Sunday with three games to be played: Rayon will face Kiyovu in the other thrilling encounter at Stade de Kigali, Police host Marines at Kicukiro while Entincelle entertain Bugesera at Stade Umuganda.
