Is the Anglican Communion on a brink of collapse?

Writer: Mr. MUGABE GRACE, a university lecturer, researcher, and religious communications expert Grate lakes Region

The Anglican Communion which was at one time loved and believed by countless Anglicans across the world has become a disgrace in the face of other religious bodies world-wide. This is as a result of an appointment of a female Archbishop Sarah Mullally to the global Anglican Chair. She is widely seen as a sympathizer of same sex marriages which the conservative faithful describes as evil and satanic.

The appointment of a lesbian sympathizer has therefore tainted the image of the church which millions regard as evil according to the biblical creeds. To add salt to an injury, Sarah Mullally is a hard core who will not even change anything to good according to impeccable sources. The underlying question is; will she save the image of the church which has been nabbed in red?

To note, all sorts of evils have been reported in the church circles for a long period of time, moreover in the eyes of church leaders. So, many ask themselves what could be the vision of the Church leadership? Does the church in Canterbury regard the bible as a Godly tool which ought not to be abused? Will Sarah Mullally repent and stop supporting gays and lesbians cause? As gauged by millions of believers and God-fearing faiths across the globe disappointment has already been registered as a result of installing a so-called Church leader who does contrary to biblical norms.  Dr. James Rubakisibo, a retired Reverend in Rwanda and a religious scientist castigated the appointment of a lesbian supporter as unfortunate to God-fearing people. He called up on the world to dislodge Archbishop Dame Sarah for the safety of the church.

“I wish the people of God across the globe could stand up and demonstrate against her appointment”, James said. “This is catastrophic, he added. “When will the Anglican Church repent? It is always in a mess”, said Christopher Mwalimu, a senior lecturer at one of the Catholic universities in Rwanda. Also, one Mis Saidati Mukabaramba a Muslim cleric in Rwamagana says she is proud of the Islamic faith because it has not messed up like Anglicans. “I wish this church could re-build its image for the good of the communion”, she remarked.

Rev. Nelson Tumuhimbise an Anglican from Kabale – Uganda echoed similar sentiments. He urged the church to reform and adhere to the biblical truth for the good will of the Communion.  Dr. Jado Musabyimana, an evangelist from Burundi in Gitega condemned the appointment of Dame Sarah as un ethical and says she does not have qualities of a church leader. He says the church is in a sorry state which needs repentance.

One Mareti Julius an Anglican from Kenya had this to say: “We shall not accept our church to fall in a pit like that. We shall keep on our knees praying for drastic change. We trust in Jesus Christ, we shall overcome”, Julius said.  Also, Jean Claude from the Democratic Republic of Congo shared similar thoughts, counting on saints prayers to rescue the Communion.  As indicated in the Book of The New Testament; Romans 1:26-27, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 and 1st Timothy 1:9-10 all do condemn homosexuality.

The former Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, His Grace Henry Luke Orombi, said “The church of God ought to be honored and respected. As church leaders we need to uphold the bible in an attempt to please God the Almighty, and live an example as Christ to preach humanity a true gospel for the sake of entering into the kingdom of God.

In line with Orombi’s point therefore, Dame Sarah Mullally does not qualify at all to lead the Anglican Communion since she does not have Godly traits.

In addition, the current Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Dr. Stephen Kaziimba castigated the appointment of a lesbian sympathizer as a church leader. He once stated that the Church of Uganda cannot partner with western churches that support homosexuality. He described homosexuality as a sin of the highest order.

Recently, the Ugandan Primate remarked that the appointment of a lesbian sympathizer, Archbishop Dame Sarah to the Chair in UK is unbiblical, sending many in shock.

On his part, the leader of the Anglican Church of Rwanda, His Grace Archbishop Dr. Laurent Mbanda who is also the leader of GAFCON condemned the Church of England for the appointment of Dame Sarah Mullally. He described the action as unbiblical and decisive. The GAFCON which he heads urges her to repent, and has accused the church of abandoning the biblical truth and weakening the global Anglican unity.

Notably, Dame Sarah Mullally is the new Archbishop of Canterbury designate – the first female to be chosen for the role. The Church has been without someone in the top job for almost a year after Justin Welby resigned over a safeguarding scandal reports say.

Reports further indicated that Justin stepped down after a damning report into a prolific child abuser associated with the Church. It found that he “could and should” have reported John Smyth’s abuse of boys and young men to police in 2013.

Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell took on most of Mr. Welby’s responsibilities in an interim move, and was one of the voting members of the body charged with choosing his successor. He himself has faced calls to step down over his handling of an abuse case according to sources.

The Global Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans, which represents conservative views, has criticized the appointment, saying that although some will welcome it, “the majority of the Anglican Communion still believes that the Bible requires a male-only episcopacy” impeccable sources say.

All in all, the Church has been embroiled in a series of scandals which has altogether lowered the reputation and caused an uproar in the global Anglican communion.
