The organisers of the Tour du Rwanda today unveiled in Kigali the route of the 16th edition of the event, which will take place from 18 to 25 February. They also made official the names of the first 16 teams selected, the last 4 will be revealed in December.
The great cycling nations of the African continent, including Rwanda, Eritrea, Algeria, Ethiopia and South Africa, will all be present, as will the professional teams used to competing in the most prestigious events on the international calendar, such as the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia and the Tour of Spain.
As in recent years, there will be Israel-Premier Tech and TotalEnergies teams, as well Belgians from Soudal-QuickStep and Lotto-Dsnty, Frenchmen from Groupama-FDJ and Kazakhs from Astana, who will be bringing their Developement teams.
The future of world cycling has already set its sights on the Rwandan roads.
The flagship event of African cycling promises to be just as spectacular as ever, and it will already have the colours of the 2025 World Championships.
Two of the eight stages will be run on Worlds circuits: the time trial, which will feature a brand new Grand Départ with a team time trial around Kigali’s Convention Centre, and the road race on the final day to round off the week in style.
This final stage will already give an idea of the difficulties that await riders from all over the world in September 2025.
The route of this 2024 edition will, as every year, consist of long climbs on most of the stages, with a 13-kilometre individual time trial on the heights of Musanze in the middle of the week for the first time.
The climb to the summit of Mount Kigali is obviously included in this exceptional programme, which will certainly make the Tour of Rwanda the most difficult race of the early season.
