Rwanda journalism universities’ representatives enjoy study tour in Ethiopia

From June 5 to 9, 2023, a delegation of four lecturers from Rwanda journalism universities is in Ethiopia for a five-day study tour.

These lecturers include Jean Baptiste Hategekimana, Dean of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Studies of the Institut Catholique de Kabgayi, Dr. Musabyimana Tharcisse from the University of Rwanda, Kirabo Joyce, Dean of students at Mount Kenya University, and Osongo Nyanyuki Andrew, Head of Journalism Department at East Africa University Rwanda.  

Organized by Fojo Media Institute and Pax Press, the study tour aims to bring East African educators together to share experiences and strengthen collaboration.

On the first day, after doing an interesting tour in the Addis Ababa City, the Rwandan delegation together with the delegation from Somali National University and the delegations from seven Ethiopian Universities, visited the Reporter Newspaper and Ethiopia Broadcasting Corporation (EBC).

On the second day, the attendees visited the Addis Ababa University for a conference where some of them presented on different themes.

In the conference, the Dean of the school of Journalism in Addis Ababa University presented on journalism education in Ethiopia and in the region, Dean of the Faculty of Journalism at ICK presented on the challenges and opportunities of print media practice in Rwanda in the digital era, while Nur Farah Omar, the lecturer at Somali National University presented on the Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) and its role in empowering Somali journalists.

Each presentation was followed by fruitful discussions to exchange experiences about Journalism practice and journalism education.

The third day was keen to group discussion about different topics such as concrete steps for regional collaboration, curricula development, gender curricula, exchange of lecturers and students, joint Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), digital online teaching, joint research, panel at East African Communication Association (EACA) and future collaborative courses.

After this session, the three delegations are now together in Howassa University for two days.
