Rwanda’s women’s volleyball champions Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) won their opening game of the 2016 Women’s African Club Championship which is underway in Tunis, Tunisian on Saturday.
RRA out shined their Pool A opponents by 3-1 (21:25, 19:25, 25:17, 18.25) sets in a thrilling encounter of Pool A.
However they will need to maintain that winning streak and will not find it easy in the second fixture on Sunday
against Carthage who finished fourth two years ago.
Having not lost to any Ugandan side, RRA will have something to prove as they face the Uganda’s Ndejje in their last Pool A match slated on Tuesday.
Organizers Carthage started their campaign aggressively as they hammered Ndejje of Uganda 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-14) in Pool A.
In the other games played, victories for the defending champions Ahly of Egypt and heavy favourites Pipeline of Kenya highlighted the opening day of the women’s championship on Friday.
Ahly overcame Wilaya Bejaia of Algeria in a thrilling encounter 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-21) in Pool B, while the Kenyan Champions Pipeline flew past Ghana’s Police 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-17) in Pool C.
In the other matches Tunisia’s Sfax upset Bafia of Cameroon 3-0 (25-6, 25-9, 25-17), in Pool B, Shams (EGY) crushed Gabon’s Ndella 3-0 (25-1, 25-8, 25-19).
In Pool D which showed also the previous African champions Prisons beating Injis of Cameroon 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, and 25-23).
Without doubt Pool B is the group of death, which includes: holders and six time winners Al Ahly (Egypt), Sfaxien (Tunisia), Wilaya Bejaja (Algeria) and Bafia (Cameroon).
Among the favourites for the crown are Kenya’s Pipeline, defending champions Egypt’s Ahly with 7 titles each, followed by Prisons of Kenya with 5 cups under their name.
2015 Bronze medalists Carthage, Algeria’s GSP and Cameroon’s FAP are also among the strong teams of the competition.
Pipeline won the title last year, and RRA finished six over role.
Since 2001, a Kenyan team has played in the final, on three occasions it has been an all Kenya affair with Pipeline and Prisons at the championship.
The 26th edition will have a record of 17 teams fight for the African Queens title, with RRA battling Bejaja in the 1st match.
After the draws, participating teams were divided into 4 preliminary pools as follows:
Pool A: Carthage (Tunisia) – Ndejje (Uganda) – Revenue (Rwanda) – Mechaal Bejaia (Algeria)
Pool B: Ahly (Egypt) – Sfax (Tunisia) – Wilaya Bejaia (Algeria) – Bafia (Cameroon)
Pool C: Pipeline (Kenya) – FAP (Cameroon) – GSP (Algeria) – Police (Ghana)
