In Nunga Gahanga sector in Kicukiro, a new commercial hub was opened up for business by Kicukiro Steel Woodwork Cooperative (KSWC) members who raised over Rwf 940 to construct the building.

Claudien Uwanyirigira one of the officials of KSWC says, the building will house a huge number of traders under one umbrella not to work and operate while scattered. This is the first phase of the construction by the cooperation.

“We raised Rwf 360 million as members and the rest of the funds was a loan from other partners Rwanda Development Bank. The first phase offered up 3000 jobs both indirectly and directly to the residents of Gahanga.”

“There a number of business including carpentry, welding, vocational trainings schools and metal sellers.” Uwanyirigira added

Some of the traders who own stalls in the commercial hub say, they have challenges like lack of a road, water, lack of markets and they say they may have be resettled to the new commercial building but others traders who remained in Kicukiro should also asked to come and join them.

Dr Jeanne Nyirahabimana, the Kicukiro district mayor, said the project is part of a dream by the district but in partnership with traders who will be using it to sale their goods and services. The commercial hub will limit chaos in Kicukiro.

Minister of Trade and Commerce Francois Kanimba says the hub will assist government in its program of setting up encouraging entrepreneurship were over 200,000 jobs will be created every year.

“Construction of such a hub shows how business is taking a stand in Rwanda since its shows skills programs with service providers are developing. Government will assist them through BDF to develop capacity skills to support their SME’s.

The Minister argues the traders to produce good quality products and services that can meet the international demand on the global markets.
