Tour du Rwanda: Samuel Mugisha retains yellow jersey after fifth stage

Today August 9, 2018, Samuel Mugisha had a smile on arrival, he had just kept his yellow jersey he has since the second day. The overall ranking remains unchanged, he has 21” ahead of Jean-Claude Uwizeye, 24” of Ethiopian Mulu Hailemichael of Ethiopia and 1’50” of Spaniard David Lozano.

The German Julian Hellmann won the double

Two days after his first victory at the third stage in Musanze, Julian Hellmann has again made his mark today in Rubavu on the shores of Lake Kivu in western Rwanda.

The German waited this last kilometer to surprise the peloton while Tuesday he had attacked four kilometers from the finish. The rider of the Team Embrace the World resisted the return of his pursuers who could never regain a meter with many bends that prevented riders from getting organized.

Julian Hellmann who never rode the Tour of Rwanda and didn’t know this difficult arrival, had studied the roadbook very well. “Like Tuesday, I thought someone was going to follow me,” he explained, “but when I saw that nobody was in my wheel, I continued my efforts to the end. It’s amazing for me to win in this way. It is a great happiness, I will always remember it’’.

At 27, Julian Hellmann is about to stop his career to devote himself in three weeks to his job as a doctor he just graduated at home in Germany. Next year, he plans to make a long road trip with his girlfriend, from Germany to Singapore for ten months.

Today, he was surprised to find that the breakaway that was taking shape of the second climb of the day with the yellow jersey Samuel Mugisha and other favorites of the Tour of Rwanda was joined twenty kilometers from the finish.

“We thought that the breakaway would go to the finish,” said the German, “but finally we continued to work and with the team of Haute-Savoie and Descartes Romandie, we organized well to return.” Then the German team Embrace the World wins its third success in five stages.
