South Sudanese Community Celebrates Literature, Culture and Unity at Grand Book Launch in Kigali

By Ayak Kueth, Journalism Student

Kigali, Rwanda – The South Sudanese community in Rwanda came together for an inspiring and colorful Book Launch Ceremony that celebrated literature, culture, education and national unity. The event attracted students, scholars, authors, community leaders, professionals and invited guests who gathered to witness the launch of several books while reflecting on South Sudan’s history, identity and future.

The ceremony began with the arrival of guests, followed by opening prayers and the South Sudan National Anthem, setting a respectful and patriotic atmosphere. The organizing committee welcomed participants and encouraged everyone to use the occasion as an opportunity to promote learning, preserve history and strengthen unity among South Sudanese living in the diaspora.

One of the defining features of the event was the series of speeches delivered by representatives from different student associations, community organizations, authors and distinguished guests. Speakers consistently emphasized the importance of education, peace, leadership, cultural preservation and national reconciliation. While each speaker approached these themes from a different perspective, they all shared one message: South Sudan’s future depends on informed, united and responsible citizens.

Representatives from the Greater Equatoria Students Union, the Jieng Community in Rwanda, the Nuer Student Association and the Fashoda Student Association spoke passionately about the responsibility of young people to lead with integrity, embrace diversity and use education as a tool for nation-building. Their speeches encouraged students to rise above tribal divisions and work together for a peaceful and prosperous South Sudan.

The authors whose books were launched also captivated the audience by sharing the stories behind their publications. Ruot Mawich Yak Deng reflected on his personal journey in My Life: From Camp to Kigali, inspiring many with a message of resilience and determination. Rev. Dr. Gabriel Riam discussed the historical and cultural evolution explored in Nuer Nation: Socio-economic and Cultural Change, while Dr. Akuch Akuol challenged the audience to confront difficult conversations surrounding trauma, masculinity and family in the diaspora through his work Violence & Trauma, South Sudanese Manhood and Family Crisis in the Diaspora.

The official book launch session featuring Prof. Peter Obadayo was another memorable highlight. He shared reflections on documenting South Sudan’s political history and acknowledged the collective effort required to preserve knowledge for future generations. His remarks were followed by an engaging panel discussion and a heartfelt speech from his daughter, making the session both intellectually enriching and deeply personal.

Beyond the speeches, the event was brought to life through vibrant cultural performances representing South Sudan’s rich ethnic diversity. Traditional dances by the Twic Mayardit, Pojulu, Ruweng, Nuer, Fashoda, Bor, Moru, Wau, Otuho, Bari and RAM cultural groups filled the venue with energy, showcasing the beauty of South Sudan’s many cultures while reminding participants that diversity is a source of strength rather than division.

Distinguished guests including Hon. Angok Akuien Chol, Eng. Jacob Manyoun, veteran journalist Atem Simon, Deng Philip Biar, Elder Peter Lual and Dr. Lual A. Deng also addressed the gathering. Their speeches praised the authors for documenting South Sudan’s stories and encouraged young people to cultivate a reading culture, preserve their heritage and become active contributors to peace, development and national transformation.

As the program concluded with book signings, photographs and networking, participants left with renewed inspiration and a deeper appreciation of the power of books to educate, unite and preserve history. More than a book launch, the gathering became a celebration of knowledge, culture and the collective hope for a stronger and more united South Sudan.

The event demonstrated that when literature, culture and dialogue come together, they create a lasting platform for preserving identity, inspiring leadership and shaping the future of a nation.
